Witness Agares is the fourth miniboss of the Darkwood biome. As Agares is a Witness, the player can only find them after they beat Leshy, the biome's Bishop and its boss.

Description

Witness Agares is a flying creature with purple fur marked with paint, three red eyes, and four horns, two of which are tangled in wire.

Agares is a Witness, a boss that only appears after you have killed a Bishop.

Encounter

Agares is only found after you have beaten Leshy in Darkwood. You can replay the fight by destroying his statue, hiding an "X" beneath it.

To find them, start a run in Darkwood, then go to the boss area, where you will encounter the Witness. After the player defeats Agares, they may indoctrinate them, allowing them to join their cult as a Follower.

Combat

Witness Agares will solely charge towards you, telegraphed by a red arrow.

Whenever Witness Agares loses a substantial amount of health, they will teleport away, spawning several Darkwood enemies. These have to be killed for Witness Agares to return.

This continues until Witness Agares is defeated.

Trivia

The name "Agares" comes from The Lesser Key of Solomon, a 17th-century grimoire compiling texts on sorcery, angels, and demons. The first book of the grimoire, the Ars Goetia ("Art of Witchcraft"), lists a hierarchy of demons that rule over Hell, listing Agares as a Duke of Hell. He is depicted as a pale old man riding a crocodile, and rules over the eastern zone of Hell.
