Forneus is an NPC in Cult of the Lamb.

Description

Forneus is a big black cat who appears to wear red plaid coveralls and a tall gold and black hat ending in three points. She appears on crusades in any area. Her shop is signified in the crusade map by a shop icon with a cat head below it. She sits in front of a caravan and offers the Lamb a varying amount of items. Until purchased, she always offers the Ambrosia Tarot Card for 50 Coin.png Coins on a gold pedestal on the leftmost side. She also offers a Blueprint, Follower Form, and Gift for free. Once all the Blueprints or Follower forms in the area have been acquired, she offers resources and a Gift instead. Destroying the props in her room also often drops red hearts, small gifts, and other resources.

Forneus is also mother to Aym and Baal, which she reveals in a dialogue that she was forced to sacrifice for unknown reasons. She states that she does not know where they are. They currently stand at the side of The One Who Waits in The Gateway.

Spoiler Alert!
This section contains spoilers of the game.

Upon defeating The One Who Waits, The Lamb can sacrifice a follower with Dark and Light Amulet obtained from the mysterious figure to bring them back (Be wary that said follower cannot be resurrected unlike regular sacrifice) as followers. These follower can be brought back to her via following as demon, as returning Baal to her rewards the player with the relic Blessed Tears of the Vengeful Father, and returning Aym will reward them with the relic Damned Tears of the Merciful Mother. Note that both followers will be considered be permanently lost and will immediately go to her upon visiting her store. The next time you visit her, you won't see Baal and Aym anymore, with her commenting that they have set up to wander across the world.

Dialogues

First meeting

"O what good are hearts if they cannot be given? I thought to keep mine to myself, once. Two kits I did have, true love found! And yet one lackadaisy summer day, my beautiful children were taken away… a gift, they said, for the one they loved most, the one that waits… I wept, I keened… But how can one say no to a God? Wherever they be, I hope they are as devoted and loving as I!"

Random dialogues

"O for a life of sensations of the heart rather than of thoughts!"

"Beauty is truth, truth is beauty, and that is all ye need know of your heart."

"Oh but a thing of beauty is a joy forever!"

"You need listen only to your heart, for there lie your truest desires!"

"One can be certain of nothing but the heart's affections!"

"That we lived three summer days, I could fill my heart with such delight, more than fifty common years..."

You don't have enough coins to buy the Ambrosia card

"Woe betide me! Thou hast not the coin. Hearts beat, and hearts break..."

Reuniting with 1st Child

"One can be certain of nothing but the hearts-"

"Oh."

"A heart remembers. A mother shan't forget."

"O, generous fortune! Should I be dreaming, never allow me to wake! Kit, fraction of my beating heart!"

[Forneus takes her child]

"Ah, Lamb! Praised Lamb! Blessed Lamb! My son returned, soul almost whole."

"Kindly deeds for kindly rewards! Take this and I shall insist"

"Should my other son cross thy path, pass unto him that a mother loves, misses, understands!"

[ Players earns Blessed Tears of the Vengeful Father Relic/Damned Tears of a Merciful Mother, depending on the brother]

Reuniting 2nd Child

"Often I would hope, and scorned myself foolish, that upon of mine eyes, my kits would return."

"When they did not, I would dream of their smiling faces held close by kindly paws! O with all my humble heart did I yearn for such!"

"And here, now... ah! The wounds of a heart once carved may yet be healed!"

[Forneus takes her child]

"Blessed lamb, the heart remains an infinite vessel. And yet mine overflows."

"Blessed lamb, what language speaks love? What of gratitude? Whichever it is, mine is due to you!"

[Player earns the other Relic]

[Players earns True Love Found achievement]

Visiting Forneus after her children have been given to her

"My kits? O, the soul of a wanderer one, and a warrior the other!"

"Miss them, I always shall! But to love them I am gratefully bound."

"They will follow their hearts, and I am only glad!"

Trivia

  • Forneus's random dialogues are paraphrased from John Keats poems.
  • Forneus is likely named after the demon of the same name from the Ars Goetia.
  • When going behind Forneus she makes an odd "Nah-dah" sound, and then pushes you away, playing the “Forneus when you try to buy something you can’t afford” animation.
  • Forneus may have actually given Aym and Baal to Shamura as when Shamura is in their follower form along with Aym and Baal, they talk about not wanting The One Who Waits to not be lonely.
    • This point is backed up with more evidence as Forneus says "And yet one lackadaisy summer day, my beautiful children were taken away… a gift, they said, for the one they loved most, the one that waits…" This means she did not give them directly to The One Who Waits but rather to someone who loved him. Out of the 4 bishops besides The One Who Waits, Shamura loved him the most.
