— Heket expressing her anguish to the Lamb once she learns the plan of the Old Faith had failed

Heket is one of the four Bishops of the Old Faith. She is the [1]second youngest bishop, the ruler of Anura, and the second major boss in Cult of the Lamb.

Description

Heket is a red frog[2] with four eyes that have black sclera and red, cross-shaped pupils. She has several cross-like protrusions sticking out from her head, and she wears a three-pointed crown with a yellow, upside-down triangular eye. Like the other Bishops, Heket wears a long black robe with golden trimmings that covers the rest of her body. What appear to be two black hands can be seen emerging from her robe, holding it closed. Her throat is wrapped in bandages, as it was slit by The One Who Waits, with some of the bandaging hanging down her back like a scarf.

After being transformed by a ritual, Heket grows to become a huge demonic frog-like creature with six eyes and a bloody, cross-shaped slit mouth. More crosses appear along her backside, and the bandages around her neck are removed, with her front legs becoming bandaged instead. Her robe now also drapes across her back, and several eye-like markings appear across her chest.

Upon being brought back from the dead, Heket is coloured with more red and has bright yellow, cross-shaped pupils. However, compared to the other resurrected bishops, she doesn't show much significant change, even in her Eldritch form. Upon being defeated and transformed into a follower, she appears with two normal eyes like those of other followers, as opposed to her base form eyes. She has a similar appearance as that of the Frog Follower Form, with the exception of six crosses protruding from her head, and her throat which is still bandaged.

If you defeat her for the second time after defeating The One Who Waits, she becomes a follower with unique sound voice and dialogue, and quests that are unique to her. Note that she will immediately start starving, and will make a beeline for the first edible meal in sight, even if Ritual Fast is active.
  • She will ask to retrieve her throat (Heket's Throat) (Relic Quest Missing Pieces) in Anura.

Before us stands the last of its kind. All others we have hunted down and put to the blade.
Kallamar
With this final sacrifice, the prophecy will be impossible to fulfill.
Leshy
The heretic who lies bound below will be condemned to eternal captivity.

And the Old Faith shall be preserved.

Darkwood - After defeating Valefar

Heket: "So it is true. The Red Crown sits upon the brow of another."

Kallamar: "But how? We did everything we could to—"

Heket: "It matters not. We need not bother Shamura with this. Deal with it, brother."

Leshy: "As you command, my sister."

Anura - First Encounter (Leshy alive)

"The Bishops… my family. Have they not suffered enough? Have I not suffered enough? We fought, pathetic vessel. We bled. We grieved. And yet the Red Crown wants more. No more."

Anura - First Encounter (Leshy killed)

"Pathetic, sniveling, vile puppet to the Red Crown. You have felled the youngest of us. We are the Bishops of the Old Faith. We protect against heresies such as yours. We are the guardians of the true word, and we will not tolerate such blasphemy. Your sins are many, and for that your loyal Followers must SUFFER! They shall starve! "

Anura - Second Encounter

Shamura: "Five points to a pentagram, five portents of doom, five siblings stood abreast, five gods and one tomb..."

Heket: "Shamura! We did not wish to bother you, but-"

Kallamar: "Shamura, the Red Crown grows stronger by the day. Already it has succeeded where he has failed before. Leshy has been slain!"

Shamura: "Five becomes four becomes three becomes two becomes one becomes nothing."

Heket: "...Shamura, rest. We will deal with this. Won't we, Kallamar?"

Kallamar: "Yes, sister! Of course, sister!"

Heket: "You there, vessel of the Red Crown! Bow to me, or you will regret it!"

  • [Refuse - All rooms turned into Combat rooms] Heket: "You will bow, or I will make you!"
  • [Bow - lose 20 Faith] Heket: "Ha! Cowardly vermin. You disgust me."

Anura - Third Encounter

"It was not so long ago that we cast out the Red Crown. A mere thousand or so years. The heresy it preached could not be tolerated. Such noxious ideals... it could not be allowed. For this most damning of sins, the retribution must be slow and painful. I cast a famine upon your Cult! And with greed and ambition unchecked, it drew Godly blood."

Anura - Fourth Encounter

"The one you serve, that monster we have put in chains, will not be satisfied until you have killed all four of us. You may have killed my brother Leshy, but you will not kill me, and you will not get close to the other Bishops of the Old Faith. We are far older and more powerful than dear brother Leshy was."

Anura - Boss Fight

"I will not suffer the same fate as Leshy... Find me in my temple. You will join your kin in slaughter!"

"Finally. I have been looking forward to this. Make your peace, creature. You will not be leaving this temple."

Anura (Post-game) - Statue Encounter

"Foul beast! You dare trap thus?"

"If you insist I suffer, so shall you."

[Heket summons 4 waves of enemies]

Anura (Post-game) - Boss Fight

"Vile, sniveling puppet... I will destroy you again... and again..."

Combat

Behaviour

Heket is a moderately aggressive boss who sits in between Kallamar and Shamura. While she tries to get closer to the Lamb, she does not attempt to stay glued to them like Shamura. All of her attacks, except for when she tries to hop onto the player, are indirect or ranged.

In combat, Heket can execute three attacks in any phase, as well as hop either to where the Lamb is or in the direction of the Lamb. She can attack with her tongue, burp out red flies that will chase the Lamb, or spit out explosive flies - each has its own slight variations depending on the phase of the fight. The fight takes place over four distinct phases: The Initial Phase, The Enraged Phase, The Miniboss Phase, and The Desperation Phase.

Throughout the fight, hoppers will constantly enter the room from surrounding areas in an attempt to attack and surround the player. The number of hoppers present will not exceed six, but as one is killed off, another takes its place. Hoppers can be used to gain fervor and to charge curses to use throughout the boss fight. If there are still hoppers at the end of the fight, they will die at the same time as Heket.

Initial Phase

During her Initial Phase of combat, Heket will be able to use 3 different moves, with each of them being preceded by a hop. Her hops can be either long, short or to the back-center of the room. She will generally fight more aggressively in this phase and will be able to hop exactly to the Lamb's location. If Heket hops unto the Lamb the player will take half a heart's damage.

Most of Heket's attacks and movements are quite slow, which provides a significant margin of safety for the player. Combine that with her large hitbox and the delay between her attacks the player has plenty of time to perform retaliatory attacks. The player should be mindful to not undersestimate the short hops, however, as they can be deceivingly fast at times and the area of effect upon her landing is quite large.

  • Repeated Fly Bomb Spit: Heket will hop directly to where the Lamb is, dealing damage in an area of effect upon landing, and will start spitting explosive flies while targeting them, which will be shown by an indicator on the ground before said explosive hazard strikes. She can perform this attack several times in a row, but will mostly do it once before either doing a short hop towards the Lamb or jumping to the back of the room to attack with her tongue.
  • Red Flies Swarm Burp: Heket will do a short hop in the Lamb's general direction, dealing damage in an area of effect upon landing, and will burp out a swarm of red flies which will then chase the Lamb, dying on contact with them or destroying them with a weapon. Although these flies die in one hit, they will automatically expire whenever Heket executes another attack so it is advised to simply move around and to ignore them.
  • Tongue Attack: Heket will hop to the front of the boss room right before the exit and will wind up before spitting out her tongue to where the Lamb is, dealing damage in an area of effect. The Tongue can be attacked albeit for a fraction of the damage to the main body, and will retract after approximately a second after which he will either Hop to the Lamb or in their direction. Note that when Heket does this attack she will never follow it up with another of the same, only after she has executed another attack will she be able to attack with the Tongue again.

Enraged Phase

Once reduced to around 60% health, Heket will roar and enter her Enraged Phase. Her attacking rate will get faster, and Fly Bomb Barrage will replace Repeated Fly Bomb Spit.

  • Fly Bomb Barrage (Replaces Repeated Fly Bomb Spit): Heket will Hop directly to where the Lamb is, dealing damage in an area of effect upon landing and will spit an unfocused barrage of explosive flies in the area around her. Where they will land will be shown by an indicator on the ground. Note that while it can be risky to attack her during this move, the explosive flies will generally land a fair distance away from Heket, giving the Lamb an opening to land a few hits.
  • Red Flies Swarm Burp: Works exactly like it did in Initial Phase, but spawns more flies.
  • Tongue Attack: Works exactly like it did in the Initial Phase.

Miniboss Phase

After being reduced to around 30% of her health, Heket will hop to the middle of the boss room, dealing damage in an area of effect, and will roar, summoning two extremely tanky Mortar Hoppers

with their own unique attack pattern and appearance derived from Zepar. They will fight much like the aforementioned miniboss, hopping twice (usually in the Lamb's direction) before executing one of three attacks involving launching explosive flies

  • Fly Bomb Line Barrage: The Mortar Hopper will spit out four explosive flies in a line in the direction of the Lamb. Where they will land will be shown by indicators on the ground.

  • Fly Bomb Hexagon Barrage: The Mortar Hopper will spit out six explosive flies in a hexagon shape around it. Where they will land will be shown by indicators on the ground.

  • Single Fly Bomb Spit: The Mortar Hopper will spit out a single explosive fly at the Lamb's location. This will be shown by an indicator on the ground.

Desperation Phase

Once the two Minibosses have been defeated, Heket will slam back down into the middle of the room, dealing damage in an area of effect. In this phase, Heket's attack speed will not increase further but instead will come in significant changes to her available attacks and her fighting style. In contrast to the Initial and Enraged Phases, Heket in her Desperation Phase will fight defensively and will completely lose the ability to jump to where the Lamb is, preferring to move with short hops and attack them at a distance from the door instead, forcing the Lamb to come to them.

The attacks that Heket uses in this phase are detailed below:

Heket does a short hop and spits Fly Bombs at the Lamb.

Repeated Fly Bomb Spit: Replaces Fly Bomb Barrage, works exactly like it did in the Initial Phase with the difference being that Heket now short hops instead of lunging to where the Lamb is.

Red Flies Swarm Burp: Works exactly like it did in the Initial and Enraged Phase, but spawns significantly more red flies.

Heket Hops to the front of the room and attacks with several tongues.

Multi-Tongue Attack: Replaces Tongue Attack, works nearly similar to the attack in that Heket will Hop to the front of the boss room and will then wind up, spawning multiple indicators around the room before suddenly launching several tongues to said indicators, dealing damage in an area of effect. This attack is much more telegraphed than its predecessor, with the wind up taking longer and the indicators appearing much earlier. The tongues also each have their own hitbox and multiple of them can be hit at the same time with one attack, this also means that should a player with a diseased heart get hit by one of tongues, causing it to damage everything in the room, Heket will take catastrophic damage and possibly instantly die.

Trivia

  • Heket's slit throat represents the phrase "Speak No Evil". It is also the name of the achievement for defeating her.
    • Due to her injury, her dialogue is wavy and rendered in smaller text (aside from a few choice lines), implying that her speech is more strenuous than that of other characters. Her voice is also deep and gurgly which could reference the effects of her injury or be attributed to her species.
    • However Heket is still able to speak despite her injury and this is likely due to the power of the Yellow Crown. Supporting this theory is the fact that when she loses her crown, and is converted into a Follower, she's shown to struggle more with speaking. Without her crown she says fewer words and takes longer pauses between statements.
  • Heket represents the Horseman of Famine. She inflicts hunger upon your followers and the achievement for killing her without taking damage is "Sate"
  • Heket references the Egyptian goddess of fertility who shares the same name, also often called Heqet or Heqit, as well as also being represented in the form of a frog. Though Heqet is associated with fertility, Heket is associated with famine. Followers of Heket worship her to stave off starvation. They pray to her for a bountiful harvest and to keep the famine at bay[3].
  • Her name also references the greek goddess of magic, Hecete (sometimes spelled Hekate)
  • Heket is the only female Bishop of Old Faith.
